Motocross & Supercross Commission Update:

2010 NZ Senior Motocross Nationals – these are under review.

This proposal has been on the table now for a couple of years to move from year end Senior MX Champs to annually in Feb/March. The main reasons behind this are:

  • For the sponsors - better and more settled weather will encourage the public to attend and give the sponsors better value for their money and wider exposure to their brand
  • For the Industry - new bikes are arriving later and later in the year. By early next year the brands will all have their new bikes in the country.
  • For the Clubs/volunteers who make these events happen, more public through the gate equates to better revenue for all their hard work
  • For the Riders: they will have the opportunity to train with the benefit of summer and daylight saving hours rather than into the event from the depths of winter. Those working for a living cannot get the time to train and be confident heading into the champs at year end - end result more entrants.

Aligning ourselves before the Aussie MX season may be a positive. Discussions with Kevin Williams last week were encouraging and we may be able to get some Aussies here to use our event as a buildup for the Aussie series. Will also prepare our boys who intend to race over there, and for wider afield this a good preparation as well.

If we can attract international riders at our Nationals this will raise the profile for everyone, Sponsors, Riders, Clubs, MNZ, and in turn grow the media interest & more sponsorship which in financial times as we are experiencing can be very hard to get.

The goal was always to change the timing of the event. Our industry is feeling the pinch as are the  riders, the bike shops, and the industry as a whole. It would have been financial suicide to run an event in late 2010, and then again in early 2011 - we had to make a call and the SX season has to be taken into account.
We need to look after ALL our riders, after all this is why any of us became involved in the first place.

We aim to provide a platform to showcase Senior MX at its best.

We delivered a MX/SX workshop in May at the MNZ AGM - it was an extremely tough call as we had only been in the newly formed Commission for 4 weeks - had one audio conference and one short meeting at Wellington airport! However in this workshop the opening line to our presentation was 'It's Show Business'. Our sport needs to be able to put on a show for the public to want to come and see, and we believe we are setting off in the right direction to do this. It will not happen overnight - SuperX which is coming to NZ again in November believes it took them 10 years to get to where they are now. The Commission is thinking long term. MNZ, the Commission and the Clubs are working together to grow the sport - and our riders will benefit.
Finally -  when a decision is made for change - it is not made just because we can. The decision is being made for the long term growth and sustainability of our sport.

Future releases will be posted here as soon as dates are finalized.
