Vale Gerald Dyer
It is with great sadness that Motorcycling New Zealand acknowledges the passing of MNZ Life Member Gerald Dyer.
Born in England in 1929, Gerald emigrated to New Zealand in 1950 and joined the Southland Motorcycle Club in 1952. He remained a proud member of the club for more than 70 years and was awarded Life Membership of the club in 1981.
Following a visit to the United Kingdom, which included the famous Isle of Man TT, Gerald obtained his first competition licence in 1964 and took part in most aspects of racing in Southland.
In 1967, Gerald became a Steward and went on to serve as a Grade 4 Steward, Clerk of the Course and District Steward (Regional Coordinator). His dedication to motorcycle sport was extraordinary, and he eventually hung up his officials vest in 2018 after an incredible 51 years of service as a volunteer official.
According to our records, Gerald was 97 years of age. While he no longer drove, his love of the sport remained strong. Earlier this year he attended the Teretonga race meeting during the Burt Munro Challenge, enjoying a day at the track catching up with friends and members of the club.
Gerald’s contribution to motorcycle sport, particularly in Southland, spanned generations. He will be remembered for not only his commitment of service, but also for the manner in which he carried himself. Gerald was a true gentleman, widely respected for his kindness.
