YOUNG WOMAN MOTOCROSS RIDER MAKES HISTORY

23 April 2024 | All News, Motocross

Karaitiana Horne made history on the motocross track today by winning the New Zealand junior women’s title after winning the senior title last weekend.

“We are incredibly proud of Karaitiana today – I am pretty sure that no young men in motocross have ever achieved this and that makes her double title even more impressive,” says Motorcycling NZ (MNZ) Women’s Commissioner, Sandra Perry.

“The MNZ Women’s Commission has been supporting clubs to increase the number of women involved in the sport, including riders, and the numbers and calibre of riders has been great to see.

“This is the first year that the Senior Women’s MX Championship was included alongside the men at all four rounds – to then add a win a week later in the junior event is some mean feat, girls really can do anything,” says Mrs Perry.

“It’s really cool to win both titles – now I want to go faster, get fitter and ride more tracks,” says NZ Senior and Junior Women’s Motocross Champion, Karaitiana Horne.

“I’ll race against the boys at all the club events in the MX2 and Junior 250 class, then at the bigger events I’ll race in the women’s class and in two years’ time I will be racing in Europe.

“At first I didn’t really want to race, I hated it and my parents had to make me do it – once I got off the track after my first race, that was it – I love it,” says Karaitiana Horne.
