New Zealand’s own heads to Scotland for the iconic Scottish Six Day Trial

05 May 2025 | All News, Trial

Nelson’s Patrick Dillon is set to compete in one of the most iconic and demanding events in the trials world — the Scottish Six Day Trial (SSDT). Held annually in the Scottish Highlands, the SSDT draws top riders from around the world to tackle a gruelling and historic course that has become a proving ground for trials excellence.

Patrick is no stranger to trials, though his journey began on a different kind of two wheels — bicycle trials. A natural talent, he quickly rose through the ranks to become the New Zealand national champion. After a period riding high-level enduro, he discovered motorcycle trials, where he’s been proving himself a top contender.

Preparing for the SSDT has been an intense yet straightforward mission! ride, ride, and ride some more. While there’s no substitute for the unpredictable terrain of the Scottish Highlands, Patrick has taken on advice from previous entrants and used their insights to build a well- rounded strategy.

Patrick’s journey wouldn’t be possible without the support of those around him. His partner Jana, has been throughout

the process a constant source of encouragement and motivation. Warren Laugesen, the New Zealand Beta dealer and veteran expert trials rider, has provided invaluable support and contacts to help Patrick prepare. Stephen Oliver has also played a vital role, coaching Patrick and offering technical guidance and insight into what to expect on the demanding UK terrain.

The SSDT is a true test of both endurance and skill. Riders can cover up to 100 miles each day on trials-specific machines, navigating a combination of road, moorland, and technical sections. It’s a unique challenge, often hailed as the most prestigious event on the global trials calendar.

Meanwhile closer to home, Kiwi riders will be gearing up for New Zealand’s own Kaikōura 3 Day Trial, held over King’s Birthday weekend. While shorter than the SSDT, the Kaikōura event is a favourite among local riders, steep tough terrain with an overwhelming social atmosphere. It stands as a great example of how trials really is still going strong.

As Patrick takes on the Scottish Highlands, the entire NZ trials community will be cheering him on. Simply finishing the SSDT is a remarkable achievement — and one that speaks volumes about his determination, and passion for two wheels.
